The Westmoreland Park casting pool offers Portland the perfect facility to display and promote electric and wind powered radio control model ships. The park setting and reflecting casting pool offers model builders, enthusiasts and their families a unique spot in the region. The casting pool at Westmoreland surpasses the only similar park pools in San Francisco and British Columbia. Model boaters are attracted to the pool from as far away as Eugene and Seattle to participate in organized races, regattas and casual events. Many users rely on this one-of-a-kind facility, from organized boating clubs representing approximately 175 members and their families, to as many independent users. Westmoreland Park is centrally located in the city and the pool’s great size allows for simultaneous multiple uses. The pool’s smooth edges, casting platforms and wide surrounding walkways provide a safe setting for all. In the event retrieval of a stranded vessel is required, the smooth concrete bottom and even 30” depth provides model boaters with a safe pool to wade in. The pool lays in a vast open area allowing for good wind for model sailboats to criss cross the pool.
Model ship enthusiasts around the region know of and appreciate the casting pool. As a native to the neighborhood, I have enjoyed building model boats and then sailing them in the casting pool since boyhood. Many wonderful hours have been spent sailing my ships with my sons and friends. Each time a vessel is launched, a crowd gathers. Everyone loves the small ships! The model boater is immediately caught in great conversations with new friends about ships, their history and operation. There are many times a dad in the crowd with a child asks, “ How do we get started in model boating?” The model ship captains are happy to share their knowledge. They look forward to the next generation of modelers. The casting pool is the gathering place for inventive model ship builders and admirers. All of us look forward to a repaired pool for future generations to enjoy.
