Mini Woodworking Lathe
More on, “How am I going to make that?”
In my shop space I don’t have room for a wood lathe of any size and I haven’t yet needed to, “turn” anything longer than a few inches. So this mini wood lathe fills the need when small round parts are required. Barrels, wenches, vents and this project, 2 capstans can be quickly made, sealed and painted. The lathe pictured is available from “Harbor Freight” for about $24. As sold, the available bed limits of 4” long and up to 1” in diameter is suggested. I noticed the bed of the lathe is made of aluminum and the sliding tracks for adjustments were equal on all four sides. I ran the bed across the table saw, cutting the bed in two, lengthwise. Then fastened the 2 halves, (end to end) and elevated up on blocks of wood, to another piece of 2”x 2” aluminum stock making the bed length double. Now I can “turn” items up to 10” long and 3” in diameter. The lathe tools that come with the set are of very low quality so a $44 precision set of mini lathe tools from “Woodcrafters” gives me everything I need. So get turning and lets make some small round parts!
